Biography

Joanna I. Garza is an associate attorney practicing exclusively in the area of immigration law at Hanis Irvine Prothero, PLLC. Joanna represents clients in a wide variety of immigration-related cases, including family-based immigration matters, U-visas, T-visas, VAWAs, waiver applications, removal defense, and much more.

Joanna was born in Texas and raised in Eastern Washington in a migrant farm working community where she developed her passion for immigrant rights and serving underrepresented communities. Joanna obtained her B.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle and interned at the Mexican Consulate during her undergraduate. After graduating from college Joanna became a Deputy Clerk for Grant County Superior Court.


Joanna received her Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2018. During law school, she served as the President of the Latino(a) Law Caucus, and Executive Editor and Symposium Editor of the Idaho Critical Legal Studies Journal. Joanna worked as a Northwest Immigrant Rights Project Intern, visiting detained individuals, providing Know-Your-Rights Presentations, hosting on Radio KNDA, and providing direct representation. During this time, she also helped organize and lead a Pro Bono initiative with lawyers across Washington state for farm workers in Othello, Washington.


After graduating from law school, Joanna moved into private practice, focusing exclusively in immigration law. She joined Hanis Irvine Prothero in January of 2020, as a law clerk and then as an immigration attorney. She is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). Joanna is a native Spanish speaker.
